Winter walks around Winchester

on Thu 10 Feb

There’s no doubt about it, Hampshire is home to some of the most beautiful scenery. We might be biased, but it’s true! Some of the greatest views are right on our doorstep and one of the best ways to see them is by foot. We take a look at some of our favourite hiking and strolling routes that our fantastic location has to offer.

Alresford

Alresford’s Millenium Trail takes you all around the picturesque town, along its renowned river and watercress beds. Make a day of it by visiting the Watercress Line steam railway too.

The Vyne

The grounds of The Vyne near Basingstoke, owned by the National Trust, make for a glorious woodland wonderland during the winter. Visit in Autumn and you’ll be lucky enough to see plenty of mushrooms and squirrels, perhaps even deer! Follow the route map here.

New Forest

If you are willing to drive to get there, the New Forest really has it all – seaside villages, heather strewn heathland, and forest walks to suit all abilities. Choose from 26 routes on the New Forest National Park website alone!

More of a challenge

Hardened walkers will be glad to hear that there’s something for everyone. St Swithuns Way (34 miles), is a traditional pilgrimage trail running between Winchester and Farnham, as part of the 112 miles to Canterbury.

Wayfarer’s Walk (70 miles) which goes from Inkpen Beacon to Emsworth in the south, passes through nearby Alresford. It’s broken into sections, each providing a great day out; from high downland with exhilarating views to chalk-stream valleys buzzing with wildlife and peaceful pubs in pretty villages.

Winchester is also one end of the South Downs Way (100 miles), a trail which goes all the way to Eastbourne. Certain sections can make for a challenging walk but are well worth it for the views and scenery alone. Find out more here.

Don’t forget to follow the Countryside Code when exploring our beautiful surroundings by:

  • Considering the local community and other people enjoying the outdoors
  • Parking carefully so access to gateways and driveways are clear
  • Leaving gates and property as you find them
  • Following paths but giving way to others where it’s narrow
  • Leaving no trace of your visit, taking all litter home
  • Keeping dogs under control
