Your Fang-tastic October Activity Guide

on Mon 11 Oct

Ghostly greetings to you all! We hope you had a wonderful September, and that you’re all well and truly back into routine and structure after the annual back to school commotion. But we’re afraid to tell you the commotion doesn’t stop there... the sound of howling ghouls, wicked witches and bubbling cauldrons can be heard in the streets of Winchester and with half term very much creeping up on us, we have a spook-tacularly amazing array of Halloween activities suitable for everyone to keep you and your family busy in Winchester this October. If you’re set on wanting a treat instead of a trick, keep reading!

Why not start your Halloween week off right by going to explore the spooky Westgate Museum? Find out how the Tudors celebrated Halloween and take home a historic recipe to make over the half term. Marvel at the historic markings left by prisoners and judge for yourselves if the Westgate is haunted. See if you can find all the witches in the brand-new activity trail too!

After that, bring your little ones and head on over to the free and fun-filled Halloween-themed Spooky Word Hunt! Walk around the mysterious and eerie cobbled streets of Winchester and seek out all nine Halloween-themed words hidden in pumpkin signs displayed in the windows of local businesses. After finding all the words, you can collect a Halloween-themed goody bag and also be entered into a prize draw to win a Halloween-inspired hamper, filled with lots of great gifts - kindly donated by local businesses!

Join the team at the City Museum, another one of Winchesters marvellous museums, as they celebrate Halloween with their spooky arts and crafts sessions! If you fancy a couple of hours of pure Halloween fun and creativity, you’re certainly in the right place. Make your own paper plate pumpkin decoration to take home, and after feel free to head down to Fort Nelson to join one of the spooky storytelling sessions; there’s no doubt you will be enthralled by Victorian tales of mysterious disappearances, sudden deaths and ghosts from the Fort’s best-forgotten history.

The fa-boo-lous Wizard Weekend at Winchesters Railway Station is not one to miss! With endless activities, the kids will be kept entertained all day long - just don’t forget your witch’s hat! Travel on the thrilling Wizard Express steam train and walk in Harry Potter’s footsteps over the famous railway footbridge where Harry received his Hogwarts Express ticket in the film! Get your face painted and make a magical wand, and if you’re feeling brave enough, get up close to hairy, scary, creepy creatures!

For those outdoorsy souls, why not bring your little witches and warlocks to fly around Chawton House’s Autumnal gardens over the October half term. Brave the new ‘Spooky Trail’ and come face to face with wicked witches, peculiar pumpkins and ghostly ghouls - only the most fearless will get to the end! Even better, all kids wearing their Halloween costume will get to visit Chawton House for free over the half term week - so what are they going to dress up as this year!? It’s time to get those broomsticks out of the closet...

As you can tell, Winchester is bursting to the brim with activities for you and your family to enjoy this October. No matter the age (or costume), it’s not going to be difficult to find something to keep you busy. And this is only a mere taste of what mysterious and creepy adventures await you in this historic hair-raising city! We can’t wait to see you here among the pumpkins and ghostly patrons - just be careful you don’t take one home with you!
