January has arrived. The decorations have been wedged into the loft, the lounge feels huge (oh the possibilities!) and the streets of Winchester are calm once again. It’s a month often overlooked for fun and often known for the January Blues, yet we couldn’t disagree more!  Let us explain why…

Mornings are crisp and bright, with mist hovering low over the Water Meadows and frost catching on the edges of ancient paths. There’s space without the pending onslaught and we allow ourselves the time to wander without hurry or pressure. We think it’s the perfect month to linger a little longer over coffee and to step into museums full of historic corners.

Frost-kissed walks and winter magic

There is something especially magical about this season, particularly when you step outside early. The Water Meadows are just one beautiful place among many, where it almost feels other-worldly this time of year, with low mist drifting across the river and frost tracing delicate patterns along the grass. It’s so beautiful and well worth a wander.

Why not follow the paths along the River Itchen and pause to watch the water move slowly beneath the wooden bridges and perhaps even spot a water vole or two. When you are wrapped up warm with cheeks pink from the cold, why not pick that perfect moment to reveal a thermos of hot chocolate secreted away for that perfect family moment.

Culture without the Christmas crowds

January is also a wonderful time to explore Winchester’s cultural treasures, when there’s room to truly take them in. Museums and galleries feel more inviting, and with so many to choose from it’s the perfect mini haven from the biting wind. Winchester City Museum offers insight into the city’s history, from Iron Age origins and Anglo-Saxon heritage to Jane Austen and King Alfred. Winchester’s Military Museums offer 5 different museums all within throwing distance and are packed full of exhibits, uniforms, historic medals and tales of courage and service.

Winchester City Mill is a rare opportunity to discover real history whilst enjoying an obligatory trip to the café by the river, followed by a browse in the bookshop and a chance to let the little ones explore the colourful Island Garden. Winchester’s Science Centre and Planetarium is always full of fantastic demos, live experiments and hands on activities, great for the whole family…and that really is just the tip of the Winchester iceberg.

Cosy coffee along the way

We humbly submit that enjoying a seamy beverage with a slice of cake in a cosy café is one of life’s overlooked pleasures. Winchester’s cafés and pubs offer deep armchairs, delicious treats and crackling fires that invite you to longer just a little longer. During your stay why not pop in to Josie’s - specialising in coffee, tea, smoothies and all-day breakfast and brunch. Or perhaps Kavis Coffee right in the middle of the city. Did you know that 'kavi' is the “… nepalese word for wise poet, embodies our belief in the poetry of free-thinking, self expression, and creativity.”

Returning to your luxury home from home

After a day exploring, there’s nothing quite like returning to your very own sanctuary. Your private lodge feels just like coming home, with a special place for your coats and boots, a familiar kettle humming to life with an altogether too comfy sofa which you won’t want to leave! So why not enjoy your complimentary tea tray and recover from the busy months just gone.

In short, we believe that January asks less of us. It doesn’t demand over-the-top celebration or schedules but instead, it offers time explore at your own pace and to enjoy Winchester the way the locals do, discovering hidden gems as you wander at leisure.
