September is an often-overlooked time of year for a short break. The summer holidays are a distant memory, the first signs of autumn are beginning to appear, and here in South Winchester we are moving into harvest season (one of our favourites!). This means plenty of reasons to visit right now and make the most of the changing seasons.

A September escape, in our humble opinion is a fantastic time to escape with friends and family. There are still plenty of warm afternoons for exploring the city and enjoying a leisurely lunch alfresco, whilst cooler evenings make it tempting to return to your lodge to cook up something delicious and settle in for the evening. It’s also a lovely and serene time to enjoy our private hot tubs, no hustle and bustle, just a quiet evening in the bubbles before it gets too cold. Off season just happens to be one of our best kept secrets.

A taste of harvest

September is a particularly good month for food lovers, as local farm shops and markets begin to showcase the abundance of the season. Hampshire's farmers' markets are a great place to pick up everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to locally made cheeses, breads, preserves and other treats. Winchester’s Farmers' Market takes place in the city centre twice during September.

For those who like to make the most of their fully equipped lodge kitchen, a trip to a local farm shop could be the start of an evening meal made entirely from Hampshire produce. After selecting some seasonal vegetables, a good local cheese (or two or three) and perhaps something handmade and sweet for afterwards, your luxury lodge will be waiting for you to see what delicious diner you can create. September is also a good time to look out for the last of the season’s wild apples and blackberries, crumble anyone?

Make the most of the outdoors

The cooler temperatures of September can make exploring the local countryside not only enjoyable but also a little easier, particularly for longer walks. Of course, if we’re treated to yet another heatwave, we certainly won’t be complaining! September really does offer the best of both worlds, with the chance to enjoy the lingering summer sunshine whilst beginning to embrace early autumn. From St Catherine's Hill, the River Itchen or the South Downs National Park, all offering stunning views and perfect picnic spots. If you prefer something slightly less exposed to the elements then you can enjoy a large selection of independent shops.
